The Charles A. Farrell Photograph Collection is arranged in five series based on acquisitions grouping. In the first addition to the collection, Roger H. Farrell distinguished between photographs taken by Anne M. Farrell and photographs taken by Charles A. Farrell, so this acquisitions grouping was further broken down into two separate series based on photographer. The four series are: Charles A. Farrell Greensboro Photographs, Charles A. Farrell North Carolina Coastal Photographs, Anne M. Farrell Photographs, Charles A. and Anne M. Farrell Miscellaneous Photographs, and Charles A. Farrell Supplemental Material. The final series of supplemental material was added during the course of research conducted in creating the finding aid and comprises copied newspaper articles, correspondence, a biographical chronology, and other information pertaining to the life of Charles A. Farrell and the Charles A. Farrell Photograph Collection.

With the exception of Series One, the Charles A. Farrell Greensboro Photographs, folder and item numbers adhere to a numbering system provided by Roger Farrell upon donation of the collection. This numbering system occasionally skips numbers, which are marked by place holding folders. Series One was organized by subject matter upon initial processing. Prior to 2008, numbering reflected only folder numbers. Upon creation of the finding aid, numbering was updated to include collection number, series number, and folder number. Due to the variety of formats present and the occasional lack of correspondence between the number of prints and negatives within a folder, folder labels do not indicate the number of negatives present within each folder. The number of prints and negatives contained in each folder may be found on the finding aid. Items housed in a folder unit may physically occupy space across multiple folders. Folder units encompassing several folders are sequentially numbered.

Charles Anderson Farrell was born in Yadkin County, North Carolina in 1893. After graduating from Wake Forest College, Farrell worked in his father Andrew Jackson Farrell's photography studio in Winston-Salem. Commercial photographer A. J. Farrell also worked for the Reynolds family in Winston Salem, capturing the photograph of the camel that was used for Camel cigarettes advertising. Charles A. Farrell joined the army in 1917 and served during World War I. In 1919, Farrell began working for the Eastman Kodak Company as a technical representative. Farrell married Anne McKaughan on February 5, 1921, and the couple had three children who survived to adulthood; Charles B., Peter S., and Roger H. Farrell. Eastman Kodak sent Farrell to Mexico as a sales representative from 1922 until 1923, when the Farrells relocated to Greensboro. Charles A. Farrell worked for the Greensboro Daily News, and according to his obituary, was the first professional photographer on staff at the newspaper. The Farrells opened a photographic studio and camera and art supply store in Greensboro called The Art Shop. Charles A. Farrell actively participated in the community by giving lectures on photography and color movies and through membership in the Rotary Club and the American Legion. Between 1933 and 1944, Charles Farrell contributed photographs to five books printed by the University of North Carolina Press, including the popular book  Tobe, the story of a young Afican American boy during the 1930s. In addition, Charles Farrell was an early aerial photographer in North Carolina. Farrell's productivity ended during World War II when he chose to use difficult to obtain photographic supplies to print images for the military stationed in Greensboro rather than for film to take pictures himself. After the war, Farrell underwent surgery and stopped working as a photographer for the remainder of his life.

Anne M. Farrell began capturing photographs in the 1930s, contributing articles and images to  American Girl magazine. In the early 1940s, Anne Farrell worked with the author of  Kabloona to help prepare images for the book. Later, Mrs. Farrell assisted Ethel Stephens Arnett with the retouching, printing, and reproduction of the illustrations in Arnett's books. Anne M. Farrell purchased The Book Shop in 1943, but sold the store in 1948 to focus on running The Art Shop after her husband's health failed. Anne M. Farrell remained president of The Art Shop until the business was sold in 1960 to Mary Farrell Hedrick, Charles' sister. Charles A. Farrell passed away in March of 1977 and Anne Farrell followed in May of the same year.

The collection primarily consists of black and white negatives and prints. The collection also contains a small number of color slides, color prints, tintypes, cartes de visite, and transparencies. The negatives and prints are typically copy negatives and contact prints, as the original nitrate negatives were deteriorating by the time they arrived at the State Archives. Copies were made to preserve the images and the original film was destroyed.

The Charles A. Farrell Greensboro Photographs series contains black and white copy negatives and contact prints related to Charles Farrell's work as a commercial photographer in Greensboro. The series is arranged according to subject matter. The series contains many photographs of unidentified groups of people. Farrell took these pictures outside to make use of brighter light and greater space. Large group photographs required risers, so many of the pictures appear in front of the L. Richardson Preyer Federal Building (then known as the United States Post Office and Courthouse at Greensboro), one of the few buildings located near Farrell's shop with stairs.
